KVPY exam stands for Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojna. KVPY is a national level fellowship program that is conducted by the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore annually.
KVPY is initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India. It is organized to promote & encourage highly motivated students to select research careers in basic science courses.
Students who qualify KVPY, they called “KVPY fellows” and they receive a monthly scholarship up to pre-PhD level. Also, they are eligible for admissions into institutes like IISc & IISER.
AIMS
The aim of Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojana is to promote and motivate students to initiate to become scientists and do the latest discoveries and innovations in science itself. Also, our government wants to progress in our country and humanity in science. So, if anyone wants to invent something then this is the first step to start.

Eligibility Criteria
The KVPY exam has three streams SA, SX & SB. The only science student is eligible for this exam. Let’s see the detail eligibility criteria
1. SA
- SA stream is for class II students. And they are only eligible when they have opted science and maths subject in class 10th board.
- A Minimum of 75% for general and 65% for reserved category(SC/ST/PWD) is required
2. SX
- The student should be in class 12th with science and maths subjects.
- But they must have scored75% (General) and 65% (Reserved Category) in class 10th Board Exam.
3. SB
- The student must be in the 1st year of a bachelor’s degree in any of the basic science courses.
- Minimum 60%(General) in Maths and Science subjects should be in class 12th. For the reserved category, a minimum of 50% is required.
- Also, you need to score 60% (General) & 50% (ST/SC/PWD) in the first year of bachelor’s degree with a science course.
KVPY Fellowships
Each Fellow will be issued an identity card for access to National Laboratories/ Universities who have agreed to extend special privileges.

KVPY Fellowship Selection Process
There are two stage to become KVPY fellows.
Stage-1: Aptitude Test
The Aptitude Test is the first round of the KVPY Fellowship. And it is conducted to check the knowledge of various subjects like physics, chemistry, maths, and biology.
Stage-2: Personal Interview
Students are only called for a personal interview when they score equivalent or more than the cut-off score. So, for this round, they need to qualify aptitude test. Through an interview, candidates have checked their knowledge of science resulted in related topics.
NOTE: Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, only the first round will be organized. There will be no interview round this year.
KVPY Examination Pattern
The KVPY exam is conducted online every year. For Aptitude Test, the exam is held in two parts and students have the option to choose three or two subjects. Let’s see
- Part 1: Option to attempt any 3 sections
- Part 2: Option to attempt any 2 sections
All the questions are of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and each question would be of equal weightage. In which, a student would get 3 hours to complete their exam.

- Part 1: One mark for each question- 0.25 negative marking
- Part 2: Two marks for each question- 0.50 negative marking
Application Process
- First of all, check whether you meet all the eligibility criteria for the KVPY exam or not.
- Register yourself on the KVPY official website with proper information.
- Fill out the personal and academic details and upload scanned passport size photo, signature, and other documents if required.
- Make a payment of the application fee on the official website through credit/debit card/Netbanking or downloading an e-challan from the application portal.
- Now finally download the admit card on the prescribed release date.

Cut off
The student who scores the same or more cut off marks can see their name in the KVPY merit list. Cut off list releases category wise for all stream. It considers various factors and it may affect when these factors affect. Those factors are:
- Number of students appearing in KVPY exams
- Who is the conducting body
- Number of Seats
- Available Number of Students etc.
